According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
Sustainable adjective sus·tain·able \sə-ˈstā-nə-bəl\ : able to be used without being completely used up or destroyed : involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources : able to last or continue for a long time This work entitled Landmark (Foot Prints), 2001-2, by Allora and Calzadilla was "informed by the following questions: ‘How is land differentiated from other land by the way it is marked? Who decides what is worth preserving and what should be destroyed? What are strategies for reclaiming marked land? How does one articulate an ethics and politics of land use?’" (Lisson Gallery, n.d.)

What is Sustainable Art?The definition of "Sustainable Art" is a "fuzzy concept" (Earnstman and Wals, 2013). It can be seen as interconnected with green art, ecological art (also known as eco art), land art, art in nature, Earth art, bio art, crop art, and the like (Schroth & Gonshorek, 2011, p.3). However, sustainable art balances environmental, social, economic, and aesthetic concerns through it's emphasis on responsible and equitable use of resources as it links these environmental concerns with social justice (Smith, 2005).
Artists who work within the spectrum of sustainable art continually seek to critically understand the problems our natural world is facing using the research of scientists, environmental organizations, ecologists, amoung others, in order to produce their artwork. Likewise, It is interesting to note that through Carruthers research, she states, “increasingly, the sciences and environmental groups are looking to the arts for partnership, collaboration and translation of vital information into forms that reach individuals, communities and organizations” (2006, p.5). It is in fact that Visual Arts allows us to see and experience the world in a different way. It allows us to focus on why our environment matters (Bensted, Mack & Penner, 2006).
